Sept 2020 SODA Meeting Video

I would like to apologize, we had a bit of a mix up in the Zoom meeting link posted in the Facebook and Nextdoor.com events. The Bitly link and the links sent to member emails were right, but the Zoom information on the Facebook & Nextdoor.com events as well as the website were wrong. I'm sorry for the confusion. I  recorded a video reviewing the information we would have covered. Below is the video on YouTube. If you have any questions about this information presented please let me know. Again, my apologies. Running SODA meetings thru Zoom is still new.

Hubbard Street - SODA History

A brief history about the name of Hubbard Street

Not to be confused with Hubbard Drive which runs East / West through the middle of Dearborn, Hubbard Street runs North / South for two blocks between Madison St. and Oxford St. in the heart of the SODA neighborhood. According to the Dearborn Historical Museum and the Dearborn Press & Guide; Huddard St. was named after Bessie Hubbard, wife of Jackson Howard Pardee. The land in the area that is now the Southwestern Outer Drive Neighborhood was once rows of ribbon farms and the Pardee family was the owner of one of those farms.
A Wayne County map from 1893 shows the Pardee farm which was bordered by Monroe St. to the East and what is now Pardee St. to the West, another street named after the Pardee family. To the North the farm border ran along what is now Oxford St. and the farm extended West in the direction of the what is now Princeton St. up to what is now Parker St.. The 1893 map shows a structure was near what is now the Hubbard St. location, possibly the Pardee family home or a building that supported the family farm.

Statement on Summer-Stephens Pool 2020

Message from City of Dearborn Aquatics Supervisor Teddy Shaskos regarding Summer-Stephens and Lapeer pools for the summer of 2020;

Thank you for reaching out. Let me clarify what is going on. First and foremost, Ten Eyck Pool was chosen over Summer Stephens and Lapeer due to the fact that it does not have a sub pump that the other two pools require to bring all waste water to grade. Both Summer Stephens and to a lesser degree Lapeer have flooding issues in their basements due to the sub pumps not being able to keep up with the demand of the pool. The flooding over the years has caused these basements to require more maintenance and more time to set up for operations. Additionally the Initial water quality at Summer Stephens is very poor and that Pool requires approximately four to six days to filter out all of the rust that is in those lines. And although Ten Eyck Pool is not without its own set of issues, it currently has none of these issues.

- Teddy Shaskos, City of Dearborn Aquatics Supervisor

Additional statement from Greg Orner, City of Dearborn Director of Recreation & Parks Department:

There have been no recent discussions about closing Summer Stephens or any of the remaining outdoor pools. Due to our having a very limited staff this year, we were only able to secure enough personnel to open two (2) outdoor pools this summer. We just didn't have the time to recruit, hire and train lifeguards like in the past. For example, we were unable to hold our annual spring lifeguard certification classes, as in the past, due to the pandemic.
We'll be opening up one (1) pool east, Ford Woods and one (1) pool west Ten Eyck, this season.
We hope to be able to offer a more normal season next year if the nation can get its arms around the Corona Virus.

- Greg Orner, City of Dearborn Director of Recreation & Parks Department

No annual passes will be available in 2020.

The new Ford Woods Pool will operate noon to 8 p.m. each day. Daily rates for Ford Woods will be: Resident: $7, Guest of a Resident: $9, and Nonresident: $14.

Dogs Welcome On Park Tracks

New Dog Waste Station at Oxford Park
Dogs are now welcome at several Dearborn City Parks, but you may wonder... Why are the No Dogs Allowed signs still up?

On Nov. 26, 2019 a new ordinance  passed by the City Council now allows leashed dogs to walk on tracks in seven City parks: Crowley, Geer, Oxford, Penn-Vassar, Schemansky, Summer-Stephens and Ten Eyck parks.

This allows for owners to walk their 4 legged friends on the tracks at these parks, but only on the track. Dogs are still "not allowed" in other parts of the city parks including public buildings, pavilions, playgrounds, or open fields within the park.

New Dog Waste Stations have been installed in several locations throughout the parks which provide bags for owners to clean up after their dog.  Next to these stations are also posted rules for dogs at the park.

Fines for violating the rules start at $100.
These rules are:

  • Dogs must be kept on a leash not more than six (6) feet in length and kept under the immediate control of the owner or person having custody of the animal. Handler must be person of 16 years or older.
  • Dogs must stay on the track area throughout the park. Dogs are not allowed in public buildings or other park areas.
  • Dog owners/handlers are required to remove and properly dispose of all animal waste immediately.
  • Dog owners/handlers are legally responsible and strictly liable for any damage or injury caused by their dog(s), such as digging, and must fill any holes caused by an accompanied dog.
  • Dog owners/handlers are required to be present and attend to their dog(s) at all times.
  • There is to be no harassment of wildlife, other animals, or other park users.
  • Dogs are required to have a valid, city-issued dog license at all times, and are available to purchase at the City Clerk's Office. (Proof of a rabies vaccination is required to obtain the license.)
  • Individuals failing to comply with posted rules are subject to citation, expulsion, or arrest as well as dog impound as outlined in Ordinance 17-1579.
  • For disruptive animals, dogs lacking the proper tags, etc., please call (313) 943-3030, For an emergency, please call 911.
