Healthy Dearborn Awarded Grant for DPS

Recently Healthy Dearborn was awarded $445,890 from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund for a healthy schools project!

Whitmore-Bolles, Nowlin, O.L. Smith Middle School, along with 5 other Dearborn schools will be a part of a program called “Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC)”, a model that will work to facilitate healthy attitudes and behaviors.

Specifically, this grant will provide for: 1) An Edible School Garden/Orchard; 2) Accompanying STEM garden and nutrition lessons utilizing the newly created school orchards; 3) Evidenced-based physical education including new equipment and technology as well as after-school energizer club; 4) Monthly family programs targeting healthy eating and active lifestyles; 5) Resources for health-related communications, and; 6) Professional development for teachers and administration.

The other school involved are: Salina Elementary; Salina Intermediate; Long Elementary; McCollough-Unis Elementary-Middle; and Lowrey Elementary & Middle.
